Pentecost!

Rev. Matt Gough

Welcome!
Hello

This Sunday will be Rev. Sharon’s last Sunday with us before she heads south to fulfill her summer ministry position at Ghost Ranch. She’ll rejoin us in August but I hope you can let her know that we love her before she goes.
First Presbyterian is a gathering of vibrant and diverse people seeking to be God’s people in Corvallis and beyond. We begin with belonging so that everyone is welcome.
I hope to see you in worship but if you cannot be with us this Sunday in worship you can join us through streaming.
Best,
Matt

Scripture:

Acts 2:1-21

Worship Theme

It is Pentecost, which celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church, and is also celebrated as the birthday of the Church. Red is the color associated with both the Spirit and the Church so wear red if you’ve got it to recognize and celebrate that we are a Spirited People!  This Sunday we offer a series of readings and hymns to help us grow more as Spirit Filled people.

Consider this poem by Mary Oliver. While not explicitly about the Spirit it evokes for me what I think the Spirit helps us understand and be.

May
by Mary Oliver

May, and among the miles of leafing,
blossoms storm out of the darkness—
windflowers and moccasin flowers. The bees
dive into them and I too, to gather
their spiritual honey. Mute and meek, yet theirs
is the deepest certainty that this existence too—
this sense of well-being, the flourishing
of the physical body—rides
near the hub of the miracle that everything
is a part of, is as good
as a poem or a prayer, can also make
luminous any dark place on earth

Think about what this video presents about PENTECOST.
